Staten Island's Disabled Crisis
It is a sad day in America when we cannot even house people with disabilities that desperately need it. Advocates for the progression of creating houses for these people blame Governor Cuomo for his failure to provide support for the intellectually and developmentally disabled. That it is a violation of their human rights, The Americans with Disabilities Act, and The Rehabilitation Act. The lack of state funding is preventing new facilities from being created as well as keeping existing programs and facilities open. Just to go off topic for a second I do not understand why this is such a problem across the United States. We already have a homeless problem, a veteran homeless problem, and now a people with disabilities homeless problem, this is just shameful. Family member dealing with this problem are shouting the words that "this bubble will burst" and eventually we will no longer be able to provide for our citizens with disabilities whoa are counting on these homes to just live. That's all they want to do is live, the fact that we are a first world country and we can't even provide housing for people that desperately need it is an atrocity. Right now there are 11,000 people on the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities residential request list through New York State. 11,000!? The state would need to build 1400 homes with each home fitting up to 8 individuals. The Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Council has tried to draw attention to the crisis and urge city officials to urge and put pressure on the Governor to take some type of action. Some individuals even report being on this housing request list for 6 years, how shameful! One example of one of these families is a daughter who has developmental disabilities, she is 53 years old and is being taken cared of by her parents who are 82 and 79 years old, due to the wait on this list they have resorted to putting her in a rehabilitation center. This angers me and cannot stand any longer, so if you think that you can help in someway and if you live in the state of New York, contact your local officials and urge them to contact Governor Cuomo and make this right. I will leave the link to this article below and you can check it out yourself.
